Chapter one

The Long Summer

That morning the river moved slowly, as if it were sleepy too. My grandmother was already in the kitchen, the coffee boiling and the radio tuned to the same station as always.

“Put your shoes on, we’re going into town today,” she said without turning around.

No one in town could remember a summer so long. The cicadas sang from dawn, and the dirt road rose in dust with every cart that went by.¹

That year I learned to swim, to make arepas and to stay quiet when the grown-ups talked about money. My grandmother said the river knew everything, and I, being nine, believed her.

“Water always finds its way home,” she would say, looking at the riverbank.

How your investment is calculated

We charge by words, not by sheets. The first billing page covers up to 310 words (250 plus 60 courtesy words, given only once), and each additional page covers 250 more words: up to 310 words = 1 page; 311 to 560 = 2; 561 to 810 = 3; and so on. Example: a 1,200-word article is 5 billing pages x 25 USD = 125 USD. A 40,000-word book is 160 billing pages x 25 USD = 4,000 USD. Rhyme, poetry or heavy wordplay can raise the price; we tell you before we start.

We accept several payment methods:

You pay from your traducasa.com account once you have approved the price.

If the job costs less than 300 USD (an article or blog post, for example), you pay in full when you approve the quote. If it's a book or another project of 300 USD or more, you pay 50% to start and 50% on delivery.

Guarantee and refunds

Service guarantee: if an office objects to the translation because of a mistake on our part, we fix it at no cost and deliver it again. Revisions of our translation are included.

Refund policy, depending on timing:

Before we start working on your document: 100% refund.
Work started but not delivered: we refund the part not yet worked on.
Work delivered: no refund, but we fix any mistake of ours at no cost.
Official fees and shipping already paid to third parties cannot be recovered.

Your documents and your data are always handled with full confidentiality.

Can I see a part before you translate everything?

Yes. For books we start with one chapter, you approve it, and we continue with the rest.

Do you translate poetry or rhyming text?

Yes. It takes more work, so we give you the price before we start.

Can I publish the translated book online or in print?

Yes. We deliver it in Word, ready for your editor or platform. If you want us to lay it out as a book, there's Desktop publishing.

Who owns the translation?

You do. We deliver the text for you to use in your work.
